Gas Storage Guidelines

(The following serves as a guideline only and is to be used in conjunction with SANS codes and standards)

  • All work to comply with SANS 10087 Part 7
  • Storage Cylinders to comply with section 9
  • Safety distances to comply with Table 1
  • Cage to comply with section 9.2.3
  • At least one 9kg Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher should be available  in case of fire
  • Symbolic Safety Signage – Danger – No Smoking – No Naked Lights – No Unauthorized Entry to comply with SANS 1198
  • Electrical Equipment to comply with SANS 10108
  • No LPG Gas Cylinders to be on the property without the gas being registered under the Flammable Liquid By-Laws
  • All combustible materials to be a radius of 3m away from the Gas installation
  • No Gas to be delivered until site is registered with local Fire Safety.

Fire position

  • Cylinders should always be stored in a well ventilated area away from sparks, flames or any source of heat or ignition.
  • Oxygen, Nitrous Oxide or any of the Oxidising Gases – whether full or empty – shall be separated from fuel gas cylinders and combustible materials by a minimum of 3m OR by a barrier at least 2m high, having a fire resistance rating of at least 1 hour
  • Cylinders shall not be stored in walkways or where objects may strike or fall on them
  • Cylinders shall also be grouped, according to the Gas Service, into demarcated areas with signs indicating the product
  • Full and empty cylinders shall be stored separately and identified by signs to avoid confusion
  • Cylinders may be stored outdoors, but shall be on ‘Hard Standing” to prevent corrosion
  • Where extreme temperatures prevail (>60˚C Cylinder Surface Temperature), cylinders shall be stored so that they are protected from the direct rays of the sun
  • Stocks of cylinders in any storage area shall be secured to prevent falling.  An appropriate method for securing cylinders is by providing a substantial chain, rope or strap which is positioned in front of, and around the cylinder(s) and secured to a solid structure
  • The nestling of cylinders is considered an equivalent safe method of storage.  Nestling depends on a three (3) point contact system.  This means that all cylinders must be in contact at three points – either with a secure wall, or with another cylinder
  • Cylinders and especially those containing liquefiable  gases such as L.P.G Carbon Dioxide, Nitrous Oxide and Entonox as well as Acetylene, shall always be handled, stored, used and transported upright
  • They shall not be dropped, dragged or rolled on their sides or allowed to skid.  Cylinders that are too large to be carried shall be tilted and rolled on the rims of their foot rings or bases
  • Acetylene cylinders can be stored with passive sprinkler protection
  • ‘Hot’ Acetylene cylinders to be treated as per instruction received from Gas Supplier
  • Gangways wide enough to permit easy access to, and handling of, cylinders shall be provided
  • Filled cylinders shall be stacked on top on one another
  • The valves of cylinders, both Full and Empty, must be kept properly closed
  • Cylinders must be stored in such a manner that they are accessible at all times for inspection, and that any cylinder may be readily and easily removed
  • All storage areas shall have adequate floor level ventilation
  • All electrical equipment and wiring that may be located in the flammable storage area shall be suitable for Zone 2 locations.  (see SANS 0108)
  • At least two notices, each with the words ‘Danger’ – No Smoking – No Naked Lights – No Unauthorised Entry, printed in black letters on a yellow background shall be displayed.  The appropriate pictograms as given in SANS 1186 may be used instead of the words
  • At least two approved fire extinguishers of the dry chemical type, shall be immediately available to the storage area
  • The storage areas mentioned above shall be located in a well ventilated area, and shall be used exclusively for the storage of L.P.G. Cylinders
  • The storage area shall not be within 3m of other flammable materials such as petrol, Acetylene, etc.
  • L.P.G or any other cylinders shall not be stored closer than 2m from the edge of a platform from which customers or distribution vehicles are served
  • The storage area for L.P.G  cylinders shall be so located as to eliminate as far as possible the exposure of the cylinders to excessive rise in temperature, corrosive substances or vapours, other highly flammable substances, physical damage and tampering by authorised persons.
  • Storage areas shall be kept clean and free from any accumulation of combustible matter, such as paper etc.  Any possible source of ignition shall be removed
  • Empty cylinders may be stacked horizontally, provided that stacks are stable and the ends of the stack are securely  wedged
  • L.P.G cylinders shall always be stored at or above ground level and at least 6m away from the opening to the basements, drains, hallows, etc where vapour may collect
  • Empty L.P.G cylinders that have been in service should preferably  be stored in the open
  • When stored indoors, empty cylinders shall, for the purpose of determining the maximum gas capacity of L.P.G in storage, be considered as full
  • In the case of any flammable or any other gas storage areas, openflames, welding and cutting operations, smoking etc, shall be prohibited in or near the storage area
  • Vehicles not specifically designed or adapted for operation in flammable atmospheres shall be prohibited from entering a flammable storage area and from approaching the  to within 5m of the storage area
  • It is recommended that L.P.G cylinders are not stored in any building that is inhabited
  • If the necessity for indoor storage of L.P.G cylinders arises, a separate enclosed store shall be provided an shall be used exclusively for the storage of L.P.G cylinders
  • Such storeroom shall be at ground level and be well ventilated to the outside air at both ceiling and floor levels. The total capacity of L.P.G cylinders stored indoors shall not exceed 150kg
  • No gas to be delivered until site is registered with Local fire safety
